Introductory essay
This very short booklet admonishes its heroine to look after her pets. She keeps birds, silk-worms, rabbits and a squirrel, but, playing with her doll and rocking-horse, she forgets to clean their cages and provide them with food and water. Her aunt reprimands her and Jane vows never to be so remiss again. The volume closes with a curious, and entirely unapropos song sung by a wandering Bavarian, urging the auditor to buy a broom.
Simply judging by appearances, a date of c.1840 or even 1850 seems most likely for the book.
