Introductory essay

'The Catechism to be learned of every person before he be brought to be confirmed by the Bishop', which appears here, was first published as part of the Book of Common Prayer in 1549. It was also usual for the alphabet to be printed alongside the catechism, as occurs here, so that religious and secular education could merge seemlessly.
