Introductory essay

Les Hochets Moraux was apparently designed to teach British children to read French at the same time as it fulfilled all the more standard purposes of the moral tale. Its rather rudimentary illustrations are perhaps the book's oddest feature - see, for example, the curious perspective employed in the depiction of a duel (opposite p.54) and of a girl with her doll (opposite p.95).
