Mungo Park, born in 1771 in Selkirk, Scotland, was one of the most famous of the early European explorers of Africa. He explored the basin of the Niger River during the course of several expeditions, and died along with the whole of the rest of his party near Bussa, in what is now Nigeria, in 1806. His travels were frequently the subject of books designed for children.
